HOW TO COPY FILEs IN LINUX?

Copying files in Linux are one of the most basic tasks you will perform when working on the command line. In Linux, several commands are used to copy files with cp this is mostly used.

1 – OPEN TERMINAL-

Press Alt+Ctrl+T to open the terminal on most Linux versions.

2- GO TO THE PROPER DIRECTORY-

Type in cd path where “path” is the address of the folder where you want to COPY your file. (/home/name/Desktop/folder instead of the just folder)

3- TYPE IN THE “COPY” TAG –

]This tag is cp with a space after it.

4- ENTER A FILES NAME-

Type the name and extension of the file you want to copy after cp and space, then add a space.

For Example– If you want to copy a file named “hey”, you would type cp hey into the terminal. If the file name has an extension on the end of it (eg- “desktop”), make sure you include the extension in the file name when you type it in the terminal.

5- ENTER THE DESTINATION FOLDER-

Type the path of the folder in which you want to copy the file. (Copy files in Linux).

For example– if you want to copy “hey” into a folder named “hello” that’s stored in the document folder, you would have cp. hey/home/name/documents/hello (type in the terminal).

6- Press “enter”-

Doing so will run your command. Your file will move in the folder to specified.

USING THE INTERFACE METHOD ( MOVE FILE IN LINUX):-

1 – KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS:- You can use shortcuts to copy, move, and paste files on Linux. Click the file you want to copy and select. Press Ctrl+C to copy the files. Click the folder you want to copy your file. Press Ctrl+v to paste the file.

2- Find the file you want to copy:- Go to the location in which the files are placed/located.

3- Select the file:– Click the file you want to copy.

4- Right-click the file– When you click the file then you will prompt a drop-down menu.

5- Click copy– In the drop-down menu you have to click Copy or Copy file on the same version of Linux.

6- Go to destination folder– Find the folder where you want to paste your file.

7- Right-click an empty space– Clicking on this, it will create a drop-down menu in the folder.

8- Click paste– “Click paste” it is in the drop-down menu. Then you can paste your file.

HOW TO MOVE FILE IN LINUX?

If you want to move a file instead of copying the file to a different folder. Then you can type mv rather than cp when specifying the file name and its destination.

For Example:- mv hey document.

This is the simple way to move files in Linux.

HOW TO DELETE FILES IN LINUX?

Deleting files in Linux is very easy. Open the terminal application.

To delete a file in a directory run: ( rm/hey/to/dir/*)

This is the most simple way to delete a file. If you want to delete all the files:-

Open the terminal application.

To delete everything in a directory run: ( rm/path/to/dir/*)

To remove all sub-directories and files: ( rm -r /path/to/dir/*)
