DIGITALOCEAN WEB HOSTING:

Digitalocean is a cloud hosting provider that offers a virtual Linux server called “droplets” with SSH access and solid-state drives. Digitalocean is an American cloud hosting company focused on helping developers launch more apps faster and easier. The main goal of digital Ocean is to use a solid-state drive, or SSD,  to create a user-friendly platform that will allow their wealth of client to transfer the project to and from the cloud, ramping up production with speed and efficiency. It is based in New York City, DigitalOcean was founded in 2011 by Ben and Moisey Uretsky. In 2013, Netcraft recognized it as one of the fastest-growing cloud hosting services, beating out Amazon Web Services, and in 2014 recognized DigitalOcean as the 3rd largest hosting company in the world. Pros of Using DigitalOcean hosting:- (DigitalOcean review) –

  • Uptime of 99.99% – DigitalOcean industry average of time for a cloud hosting service is 99.94%. DigitalOcean blows pun intended with a whopping 99.99%. That means from April 2018 to March 2019, DigitalOcean had only 8 outages that all together equal to only 43 minutes.

The average uptime for the past 12-months :-

–  March 2019  average Uptime:  hundred percent

–  February 2019 average uptime: hundred percent

–  January 2019 average uptime is 99.98%

– December 2018 average Uptime was 100%

how does digitalocean work, digitalocean review

It has clearly shown that there is a small dip in the summer,  with the lowest recorded uptime percentage coming in at 99.94 per cent in July. But the system rebounds in August, with no outages occurring throughout September, October, November, or December. That’s an improvement in the right direction. The arrow is constantly moving up, it shows that DigitalOcean is on top of its problems.

  • Lightning-fast load times – Uptime is the number one statistics to see for when selecting a web hosting. DigitalOcean is not just fast…it’s the fastest product we’ve ever reviewed. Seriously, it leaves the other top hosting programs we’ve reviewed in the dust. The industry average load speed is 890ms. At its fastest, DigitalOcean was moving at an incredible speed of 218ms. At its slowest, it was 496ms. Even when performing at its lowest it was still nearly 50% faster than the industry average. The last months are comparatively some of the fastest which we’ve ever seen which makes DigitalOcean a competitor to the first spot in overall site speed. Currently, the fastest speed belongs to A2 Hosting.
  • Developer friendly product Ecosystem – DigitalOcean is not just a one-trick pony. Their suite of products offers tons of potential for developers.

Droplets:- Droplets is a scalable computing platform that can be customized to meet all of a business’s application needs. It also includes add-on storage, monitoring, and advanced security. It allows You can choose between standard or optimized droplets and then customize to your heart’s content. Droplets let devs skip time-consuming installation and configuration to move right along toward code deployment.

Spaces:- Droplets is for app deployment, whereas Space is about simple object storage. If talking about a security system that allows you to store and deliver data to applications and end-users. Spaces operate under a simple process, creating reliable storage with a drag-and-drop UI or API. Spaces can be used to store backup files, weblogs, data analysis, and much more.

The service is also scalable, so your Spaces can grow with your company. What’s more – Spaces can be combined with other DigitalOcean features, or it can be used on its own.

Kubernetes:- Spaces can be used to store backup files, weblogs, data analysis, and much more. The service is also scalable, so your Spaces can grow with your company. What’s more – Spaces can be combined with other DigitalOcean features, or it can be used on its own.

  • Customizable pricing:- Actually customize everything you pay for – your site storage, CPU usage, bandwidth, database, memory, etc. It’s really a great advantage if you’re an advanced user and already familiar with exactly what you need, what your goals are, what you don’t need, etc.
  • Daily Backups:- DigitalOcean performs backups daily and you can always restore any data up to 7 days prior. Even though DigitalOcean has superior uptime, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
  • Good security:- Your data and traffic are always secured. This is something that many other hosts don’t emphasize much or don’t even provide. DigitalOcean makes sure that your data is protected end-to-end. It’s a great advantage to keep those ill-willed connections and viruses out of your site system. By default, DigitalOcean has added encryption to its volumes. If you want to add an additional layer of security, like with most of their features, you’ll have to go through a tutorial, follow the steps, and know some coding in order to succeed.

Cons of using DigitalOcean hosting (DigitalOcean review) :-

  • Lacks in basic features:- DigitalOcean caters to a more advanced crowd, they don’t throw in a bunch of basic features that many other hosts will provide or take care of for you after signing up.

Stuff like:

Free domain name with hosting

The ability to even purchase a domain name

Free site migrations

It mean – they can help you with some of this stuff. But you shouldn’t expect a lot of hand-holding services when you sign up.

  • Limited Customer support:- They don’t provide 24/7 customer support. If your website goes down in the middle of the night (which could be disastrous if you’re dealing in overseas markets), there’s no one for you to talk to. You have to go to their website and open a support ticket using their online form. Even if it’s not 24 hours, the ability to converse with a real live human being in real-time during business hours is better than a contact form with vague promises of “We’ll get back to you shortly.”

  • Complicated cPanel:- DigitalOcean is definitely not for beginners. Basically, a cPanel is what you need to build your website nowadays (unless you’re in good terms with programming languages). For DigitalOcean, to start with, you’ll need to set up a Droplet of your choice (DigitalOcean servers). Then you’ll need to install the cPanel following a thorough guide involving inserting several code commands (yes, you have to know some coding), registering your account, installing the execution file, and etc. On top of all the other stuff, you’ll need to purchase the right from a third party to use the cPanel. It’s a monthly payment of $20 or $15 if you know where to look for. If you have no experience with coding and how to be a developer yourself, we suggest, you either hire a developer (a good one) or avoid DigitalOcean and find solutions that suit your needs and skills more. The usability of cPanel is relatively intuitive, but then again – there’s a learning curve and it’s definitely not for the beginners.
  • Pricing is expensive:- DigitalOcean is a highly functional product that costs a pretty expensive. Droplets starting out at $5 per month. Now, this only comes with 1GB of memory. The prices rise from there, getting higher and higher until you’re paying $80 per month for more high-end services. When you look at the CPU Optimized Droplets, those are starting at $20 and going all the way up to a whopping $920 per month. Spaces, which starts out with 250GB of storage, starts at $5 per month, which – coupled with the first tier of standard Droplets – would come out to $10 per month. It is important to remember that you get unmatched speed and performance for the higher price with digital ocean.

  • Complicated pricing:- Once you get into the pricing plans, you’ll head will go dizzy of all the options and possibilities which you can use and upgrade. There are different categories for bandwidth, space, servers (different speeds), CPU, security options, and etc. Simply put – with DigitalOcean there are lots of ways to make your monthly fee really-really pricey. Most other providers offer 2-5 different plans which give you a good overview of what you get. With DigitalOcean you can customize everything yourself. It can be a good thing, but unless you’re an advanced user (as mentioned above), it’s rather complicated and time-consuming. Plus, as stated in the previous section, the prices are rather steep compared to other providers.

Cloud hosting services of DigitalOcean:-

DigitalOcean services are created especially for developers of all scales from individual to Enterprise.

Hosting plan :-

Digitalocean offers several levels of cloud Based hosting depending on your storage and volume made and build on a monthly or hourly basis.  the label you choose will determine the amount of memory, Core processor, disk space and transfer limit included in your Plan. Digitalocean makes it easy for a developer to deploy and scale. The great thing about their services is that you only pay for the resources you use.

You have to pay on the bases of :-

  1. RAM
  2. CPUs
  3. Disk space all SSD
  4. Bandwidth

Developers:- Developers can use DigitalOcean to create virtual servers, or “droplets,” in under a minute. With each droplet, you get full root access, including the ability to customize your server setup and choose your operating system.

All of DigitalOcean’s plans also include:

  1. Solid-state drives (SSD)
  2. DNS management
  3. A simple account control panel
  4. Global image transfer (ability to spin droplets in different datacenter regions from snapshots taken in a different region)
  5. Private networking (your separate droplets in the same datacenter can communicate with each other without counting against your bandwidth limits)
  6. Choice of several Linux distributions, as well as FreeBSD
  7. Pre-built app images
  8. Automated backups
  9. Cloud firewalls.

DigitalOcean does not provide any managed hosting plans, shared, or dedicated hosting.

Droplets:- The advantage of using droplet is that you can spin up new machines quickly if you suddenly get a lot of damage. DigitalOcean calls it virtual machine droplets. They have two types of droplets: Standard and CPU optimized.

Standard Droplets vs CPU Optimized :-

CPU Optimized droplets are exactly what it says on the tin: virtual machines with beefier CPUs for computation-intensive jobs. Consider going with one of these droplets if you’re doing video encoding, machine learning, or high volume scraping. Otherwise, standard droplets are perfect for most web apps in my experience. Consider this basic comparison table of what you would get for $40 per month:

                      Standard Droplet           Optimized Droplets

vCPUs 4 (not dedicated) 2 (dedicated)

Memory 8 GB 4 GB

SSD Disk Space 160 GB 25 GB

Transfer (Bandwidth) 5 TB 4 TB

It’s clear that the main reason the optimized droplets are more expensive in general is the more powerful and dedicated CPUs. So unless you specifically need those, stick with the standard ones.

Features of DigitalOcean review:-

On top of the droplets that DigitalOcean is well known for, they offer many  extra and additional features to help developers.

  • Kubernetes:- Kubernetes lets you quickly deploy and scale up a containerized app in clusters. DigitalOcean provides all the main Kubernetes components for free, and you’ll only pay for the resources they use.
  • One-click Apps:- DigitalOcean also offers one-click apps for your droplets, so you can save even more time.

These apps include:

  1. MySQL
  2. Docker
  3. LAMP stack
  4. MongoDB
  5. Node.js
  6. WordPress
  7. PhpMyAdmin
  8. Ruby On Rails
  9. Ghost
  10. Machine Learning.

They have pretty much every web development buzzword you’ve ever seen on Hacker News. You only pay for the machines you use, which can help you control costs. It’s no accident that cloud computing providers like Amazon and DigitalOcean are popular with startups.

  • Load Balancers:- If enabled, which is easy on DigitalOcean, load balancers spread out your traffic to multiple droplets to ensure that all users have an optimal experience. You pay a very small flat hourly fee for load balancers.
  • Collaboration and Reliability:– The company has also made it easy for teams to collaborate in building DigitalOcean-enabled apps.

They can work together, being billed on one invoice and not having to share credentials, which can compromise security. For more reliability, the company offers “Floating IPs,” where IP addresses can be quickly redefined.

If a droplet fails, its IP can be reassigned to a standby droplet to keep the app running.

Control Panel and Interface :-  Control panel made through the web hosting industry but digitalocean is not like a typical web hosting provider.

Install cPanel Yourself:-

If you want cPanel, you’ll have to purchase and install it yourself. It’s not available on the one-click deployments.

DigitalOcean is geared toward the kind of people who have a favorite Unix shell, and who wouldn’t need to be pampered with a graphical control panel. Their target market is the hard-core developer who lives inside a text editor and an SSH window, so the lack of cPanel is not a major loss.

The DigitalOcean Interface :-

The good news is that DigitalOcean already has a well-designed interface for deploying and monitoring your droplets. Here’s the main DigitalOcean interface, you’ll manage your “projects” and droplets using the menu bar on the left side: The DigitalOcean interface is clean and intuitive to use.

You can use the bright green “create” button at the top to add a new droplet, domain, load balancer, or any other feature at any time.

Data and Storage :-

DigitalOcean offer two types of storage :-

– Block Storage and – Object Storage

  • Block Storage:- DigitalOcean block storage amounts are fully customizable. It works just like a hard drive on your computer. Block storage ranges in size from 1GB to 16TB. It can easily combine blocks just like a RAID system. The data in the blocks are replicated across several server racks for redundancy. Block storage encrypted to keep prying eyes from seeing your sensitive information.  Through this you can re-scale the blocks in real-time and move them to different droplets.

Formatting Block storage – Blocks can be automatically formatted and attached to ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, CoreOS,  and Fedora atomic droplets. Blocks are also burstable for an extra speed boost. Its all of the blocks run on SSDs, so its quickly fast.

  • Object Storage:- DigitalOcean also offers object storage, which it calls Spaces. Spaces are best suited for storing large amounts of unstructured data like video. DigitalOcean is geared toward the kind of people who have a favourite Unix shell, and who wouldn’t need to be pampered with a graphical control panel. Object storage works differently from block storage. The basic data is unstructured, with no fixed format, unlike the file structure on block storage. Object Storage works as The device it’s stored on doesn’t matter. You just put data into the blob and get it back out again when you need it. Data in Spaces can be accessed publicly without the need for a webserver dedicated to serving up files to users. The fewer servers you need, the less complexity for your site and the less money you have to spend building it.

Infrastructure:-

DigitalOcean has datacenters in:

  • San Francisco
  • London
  • Singapore
  • Bangalore
  • Three each in New York and Amsterdam.

The Singapore datacenter supports IPv6, and DigitalOcean plans to roll out support to their other datacenters in the near future.

  1. Specialized Technology:- DigitalOcean has established its own custom back-end software. Cloud servers are built using KVM Virtualization on Intel’s Hex-Core CPUs with dedicated ECC Ram and RAID SSD storage. From the cPanel, you can one-click install common applications or Linux distributions to your droplets, such as CentOS or FreeBSD, and WordPress or Drupal.
  2. Backups:- DigitalOcean offers backups and snapshots that can be used to save, restore, or duplicate your droplets. Backups are stored by DigitalOcean and cannot be downloaded. DigitalOcean stores snapshots and backups on separate hardware from the original data.
  3. Security:- Security is always a concern with any web host, but it becomes especially important when it comes to cloud hosting. Limited staff access – DigitalOcean restricts staff access to its most critical systems: technical support staff do not have access to the backend hypervisors, and only the engineering team can access the snapshots and backup storage system. Their data centres are physically protected by round-the-clock security staff. They also have biometric readers and two-factor authentication. They are certified by national and international security standards.
  4. User Monitoring:- DigitalOcean has an extensive control panel with real-time monitoring of droplet deployments. Customers can track:

– CPU usage

– Network usage

– Disk usage

– Disk I/O

– Memory usage

– Droplet Processes

5. Customer Support:- DigitalOcean offers support via a ticket system. Issues can be marked as critical for immediate attention. They do not offer live chat or phone support. DigitalOcean aims to equip their users with the knowledge they need for complete self-sufficiency, so they place more of a priority on documentation and community support than on direct, one-on-one customer service.

6. DigitalOcean Community:- The DigitalOcean Community is designed for users to interact and provide support to each other. DigitalOcean also encourages user support via the DigitalOcean Community. The DigitalOcean Community is a platform created and maintained by the company for users to interact and provide support to each other. Users can create their own profiles and upvote and subscribe to topics; read, comment on, request, and submit tutorials; ask and answer questions in the Q&A section, and share API projects.

7. Billing:– Every DigitalOcean account is invoiced monthly and billed per hour based on usage up to your monthly cap. You can cancel your account with DigitalOcean at any time through your customer control panel. They do not offer refunds for payments already made.

Payments

DigitalOcean accepts payment via PayPal or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover). They do not accept debit cards, checks, or money orders due to past security issues.

Uptime Guarantee

DigitalOcean promises 99.99% uptime and offers to issue a credit for any downtime beyond that. While they don’t provide details on the process, several users have noted in the DigitalOcean Community that they received fair compensation for downtime.
